Benefits of Handmade Gifts: Why I Give Handcrafted Presents (Without the DIY Stress)

There’s something truly magical about receiving a handmade gift, isn't there? The thoughtfulness, the uniqueness, the personal touch – it all adds up to create a truly memorable experience.

But what if I told you that you could give handmade gifts without the stress of DIY?

I'll be sharing with you the benefits of handmade gifts, why I choose to give handmade gifts, and how you can do it without the hassle of crafting everything yourself.

Here’s why I think handmade gifts are better

Ben Carson said, "Happiness comes from what we give, not what we get." By choosing handmade gifts, you support artisans and celebrate their craftsmanship.

1. Handcrafted gifts are personal

I truly believe that gifts should come from the heart, not just from the store shelves.

That's why I choose to give handmade gifts— they reflect the personal touch and thoughtfulness that I want to share with the people I love.

Take, for instance, the time I spent hours crafting a scrapbook filled with cherished memories for my best friend's birthday. Each page was carefully adorned with photos, ticket stubs, and handwritten notes, capturing the essence of our friendship. It was a tangible expression of the bond we shared—a gift that couldn't be replicated by anything off a shelf.

Whether it’s a close friend, a family member, or a colleague, a handmade gift shows that I’ve taken the time to choose something special just for them. It’s a way of saying, “I appreciate you,” in a way that words alone can't convey.

Research backs up this sentiment.

In a survey of 2,000 Americans conducted by  One Poll, a staggering 62 percent say they prefer gifts that feel genuine and personal. This statistic reaffirms that there's something uniquely meaningful about handmade gifts.

And when I see the delight and gratitude on the face of the person receiving the gift, I know that my efforts have been worth it. There's a magic to giving and receiving handmade gifts that you just can't find with mass-produced items.

2. Handcrafted gifts allow you to support small businesses and local economies

One of the reasons I'm drawn to giving handmade gifts is the opportunity to support small businesses and independent artisans.

Every time I purchase a handmade gift, I feel like I'm making a tangible difference in someone's life.

Instead of lining the pockets of a faceless corporation, my money goes directly into the hands of a skilled craftsman or woman, supporting their livelihood and fueling their passion.

My friend once joked that choosing handmade gifts is like staging a rebellion against the mass-produced, soulless commodities that flood the market. And in a way, she's right. With every purchase, I'm making a conscious decision to support the livelihoods of skilled craftsmen and women, rather than lining the pockets of corporate giants.

As a supplier of handmade items sourced from Africa, I've had the privilege of engaging with the artisans behind each creation. Their stories are as remarkable as their craft, weaving tales of resilience, and community spirit. Whether it's a woven basket or a handcrafted bag, buying these products helps support their local economies.

It's about ethics too.

Many factory-made products are produced under questionable labor conditions, with little consideration for environmental impact. In contrast, artisans pour their heart and soul into their work, crafting each piece with care, and using eco-friendly materials.

3. Handmade gifts are an eco-friendly and sustainable choice

Handcrafted items are sustainable and eco-friendly. The people who make them use natural, biodegradable materials, which means they won't end up in a landfill for decades like many plastic products.

Take, for example, the stunning  handwoven baskets  from our store, Rufina Designs. They are handcrafted by African women using sustainable materials like elephant grass and sisal.

The materials are locally sourced, which means they have a much lower carbon footprint than if they were made from plastic. The things are locally sourced and are not a danger to the environment.

By supporting these artisans and choosing handmade, you can contribute to a more sustainable future while still giving thoughtful gifts.

4. You won’t have to stress about shopping

Giving a handmade gift doesn’t necessarily mean you have to be the one making it.

Instead of stressing over DIY projects that may not turn out as planned, I prefer to support talented artisans who excel in their craft.

By purchasing handmade items from skilled makers, I can still give a gift with a personal touch without the pressure of DIY perfection.

And the good thing is that I can find a wide range of African handmade gifts, from sculptures and handcrafted jewelry to sun hats and more.

5. Handmade gifts are unique and thoughtful

Perhaps one of the most powerful things about giving a handmade gift is the opportunity to give someone a piece of yourself.

Whether it's a piece of jewelry made by a local artisan or a scarf knitted by your own hands, handmade gifts are a way of sharing your love and appreciation for the person you're giving them to.

And from the name, gifts made by hand by real people are unique. It won't be perfect, but I think, that’s the appeal.

I'll never forget the Christmas when my sister gifted me a knitted scarf she had made herself. Although it wasn't perfectly stitched or flawlessly symmetrical, it was infused with her love and effort. That scarf was not flawless, but it was precious to me all the same. They're heartfelt expressions of love and thoughtfulness.

A Word of Advice About Gift Quality

Benefits of handmade gifts

When giving handmade gifts, they should be of high quality, just as you'd expect from others.

Giving handmade gifts is all about spreading joy and gratitude. It allows you to show people how much they mean to you. I love giving and receiving gifts be it small tokens or grand gestures.

But here's a word of advice: let's keep it fair. When giving handmade gifts, they should be of high quality, just as you'd expect from others.

Benefits of handmade gifts like supporting local artisans and finding unique gifts from African countries is wonderful, but it shouldn't mean compromising on quality.

I learned this from my mum. She always said never to give someone something I wouldn't want to receive myself.

I think this is especially important for handmade gifts. Don't give it out if you don't want it.

Another thing to consider is that not everyone may appreciate handmade items.

Some people might perceive them as cheap or insincere. So, before investing in a handmade gift, make sure it's something the person would genuinely appreciate.
