Wall Decor Ideas on a Budget (That Don’t Look Cheap!)

You can style your sofa or splash out on a fancy lampshade, but if the walls are blank, the room just feels… unfinished. And I know that decorating walls can be expensive. Original art, oversized frames, and designer wallpaper all add up.
I remember staring at my own blank walls years ago, feeling overwhelmed by the endless possibilities and intimidated by the price tags on original artwork. That's when I started getting creative, and honestly, some of my favorite pieces came from the most unexpected places and cost almost nothing.
You probably have more options lying around than you realise. And with a little imagination, you can fill large empty spaces in a way that reflects who you are, without draining your bank account.
I’ll be sharing with you some of my favourite wall decor ideas without draining your wallet.
1. Use woven wall baskets
One of the most budget-friendly ways to make a wall statement is with woven wall baskets. I’ve got a few clustered above the sofa in my living room. Most of mine are handmade from sustainable elephant grass and come from places like Ghana, Rwanda, and Uganda.
Mix different shapes and sizes to create a beautiful display. You can go symmetrical if that’s your style, or do what I did and hang them in a slightly scattered pattern to keep things relaxed.
Asymmetrical layouts work well, especially in bedrooms or hallways. And the best part? You can build your collection slowly. This approach is budget-friendly and allows you to experiment with different arrangements as your style develops.
I sell a lovely range on my Rufina Designs shop that is crafted by skilled artisans across Africa.
2. Create a gallery wall of photos

I’m a sucker for family photos. I have a gallery wall in the hallway made up of holiday snaps, candid pictures of my family, kids, and moments that matter to me. It didn’t cost me much at all. I printed the photos online and picked up simple wooden frames in various sizes during a sale.
You don’t need a huge collection. Just a few meaningful ones in similar frames can completely change the mood of a space. You can keep everything uniform if you prefer a cleaner aesthetic.
I like mixing black-and-white prints with a few colour ones for contrast. If you’re tight on space, try a neat row above a console or across a shelf.
3. Use what your kids make as wall art

If you have children (or nieces and nephews who love to draw), you already own a trove of art.
Instead of letting their paintings pile up, why not frame a few favourites and hang them? I’ve done this with my daughter’s odd-looking rainbow painting. It’s hanging proudly in the kitchen. It adds joy to the room and shows her that her creativity is valued.
Pick a few of your kids’ masterpieces and frame them. They’ll feel like little Picassos, and you get original art that’s completely personal and (bonus!) free.
4. Hang planter baskets or wall planters

Plants are my not-so-secret decorating weapon. And you don’t need floor space to enjoy them, as wall planters are a lovely way to bring greenery to eye level.
You can mount simple wall planters or even repurpose tins, mugs, or jars. If you’re like me and forget to water plants now and then, faux greenery can still do the trick, just pick good-quality ones.
I have beautiful planter baskets from Rwanda and Kenya in my collection that work beautifully as hanging planters or shelf decor.
5. Removable wallpaper and decals

For renters or anyone who likes to change things up, removable wallpaper is a good call. You can create an accent wall or frame smaller pieces for a gallery effect. The peel-and-stick options available now are so much easier to work with than traditional wallpaper.
6. Make your own art

One could say DIY wall art is a messy fun that pays off. You don’t need to be an artist to make your own wall décor.
I once made a simple canvas with leftover house paint and some masking tape. If it’s good enough, you’ll be surprised to hear guests ask you where you bought it. You can also use paint samples, magazine cutouts, or pressed flowers between glass. It’s about expressing yourself.
Even if you're not thrilled with your first attempt, the process is therapeutic, and you might surprise yourself. Grab some acrylic paint, a blank canvas, and try your hand at something abstract. Even better if you rope in a friend or your kids and make a night of it.

7. Use decorative mirrors

A good mirror can do wonders. It reflects light, makes the room feel bigger, and it’s nice to catch your own reflection sometimes.
You don’t need anything fancy. Look for second-hand mirrors with interesting shapes, or pick up a plain one and spray-paint the frame to match your colour scheme if needed.
Pro tip: hang a mirror opposite a window to ‘double’ the daylight in the room. What it does is create the illusion of a brighter, more spacious room.
8. Hang vintage plates or fans for a statement look

This one’s a bit unexpected, but if you love vintage touches, try hanging decorative plates or fans. I'm particularly fond of using African straw fans as wall decor. I’ve hung a few from my collection, and I’m always amazed at the response I get.
They’re lightweight, easy to hang, and they come in vibrant patterns and earthy tones. You can display just one large one or group them together for a textured, high-impact look. And yes, I do stock them at Rufina Designs, so you know where to find them!
9. Display items like postcards, Scarves, Textiles, & Sentimental Keepsakes

Get creative with what you frame. Vintage scarves, family heirlooms, postcards, interesting fabric samples, and even beautiful wrapping paper can become art when properly displayed.
I've seen postcards from travels arranged in matching frames create stunning focal points.
I love the idea of displaying African textiles like Kuba cloth because of the cultural significance and just the beautiful look. Even old sarongs, napkins, or vintage scarves can work. All you need is a frame that fits and maybe an iron to smooth it out!
10. Floating shelves for decor and storage

Floating shelves are perfect when you want a rotating display—books, candles, small plants, woven baskets, framed art.
They give you a chance to show off your favorite things without cluttering up your furniture. I personally love styling mine with baskets, books (spines turned in for a clean look), and small mementos from my travels.
11. Free printable art
Many museums and galleries offer high-quality digital versions of classic artwork for free. You can print these at home or at a local shop and pop them in a frame.
Try The Met’s Open Access collection or the Rijksmuseum and British Library. Wrap it up in a budget-friendly frame, and you’ve got yourself something that looks luxe, without the price tag.
Ready to give your walls some love?
If there’s one thing I’ve learned from running my brand and decorating my own home, it’s that style doesn’t come from how much you spend. It's as simple as surrounding yourself with things you love.
You don't need to decorate every wall in the house at once. Start with one area that bothers you most, and gradually add pieces as you find them and as your budget allows. This approach also gives you time to live with your choices and see what works in your space.
It could be a woven basket from Ghana, or a framed £3 wallpaper sample, just trust your instincts and have fun with it. That’s how you create a space that feels like home.
At Rufina Designs, I’m proud to offer affordable handcrafted baskets, fans, and planters that help you do exactly that. Whether you're filling a big blank wall or refreshing a tiny nook, you’ve got so many options to make it yours.
